In 2011, MCC established its Economic Development and Innovative Workforce Services division (EDIWS). The mission of EDIWS is to:
- Actively create and promote a robust applied-STEM, career and technical education and middle-skills career pathway system
- Support investment in curricula and equipment for academic, career and technical education, and industry-targeted programming
- Proactively address the shortage in the educational pipeline (future workforce) and skills gap in the existing workforce
- Provide outreach to Rochester business and industry in an aggressive and pervasive way
In support of our mission, EDIWS has undertaken several projects to develop and analyze local labor market information and gain a data-driven understanding of our local workforce dynamics. The point is not measurement for measurement’s sake, but making this information actionable and impactful to the workforce function of the College.
Our most recent report, Measuring Middle-Skills Occupational Gaps within the Western New York Regional Economy, uses a labor supply/labor demand analysis applied to 23 middle-skill occupational groups from five local workforce clusters: advanced manufacturing, skilled trades, information and computer technology, health care, and hospitality and tourism.
The sector analysis includes dashboards identifying and measuring educational attainment through a region’s capacity to produce certificate and degree completions against estimated annual openings for each middle-skills occupational group.

Year after year, the Monroe Community College Foundation continues to help MCC create the workforce of the future. More than 50 Rochester business and community leaders serve on the MCC Foundation Board. Together, they ensure that any student who has the desire to learn and succeed has access to grants, scholarships and other financial aid, so that he or she can earn an outstanding education through MCC.

In 2021-2022, the MCC Foundation:
- Transferred $3.9 million in contributions from private philanthropists to the MCC Foundation to the college in support of programs, facilities and scholarships
- Awarded nearly $1.1 million in scholarships to MCC students
- Granted $420,903 in emergency funds to 782 students through the MCC Assist program to help students overcome basic needs insecurities
- Grew the MCC Foundation endowment to nearly $18 million

MCC is fortunate to have so many enthusiastic supporters who allow us to sustain the MCC Foundation’s many beneficial community programs. Here are just a few of the philanthropic initiatives that enable so many others to succeed:
Save for Success Grant
The $200,000 Save for Success grant, awarded from the Assets for Independence Program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is designed to help low-income high school graduates, first-generation college students and dislocated workers. By matching MCC students’ savings, the program increases their economic self-sufficiency and decreases their need for student loans.
Pathways to Success Grant
Another project funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the $500,000 Pathways to Success grant, developed to help young student-parents complete high school and pursue a college degree.
Faculty Grants
Monroe Community College owes much of our success to our dedicated, award-winning faculty who inspire our students every day. During 2013-2014, five special faculty and staff members were awarded $28,823 in grants for their innovative ideas and proposals, which will ensure students at MCC have access to the latest technology, the highest level of support and much more.
Greater Rochester Health Foundation Grant
The MCC Foundation is thankful to the Greater Rochester Health Foundation for its generous grant of $597,000, which has allowed more than 450 students from Rochester city schools to attend the Healthy Hero Summer Camp at MCC. This five-week camp reduces learning loss and motivates students to stay healthy over the summer. Support from Glover-Crask Charitable Trust helps keep this healthy learning experience affordable for families.

Civic engagement is a tremendously important part of Monroe Community College’s mission. From improving the local economy to unique initiatives to helping young, at-risk students succeed personally and academically, MCC students, faculty and staff work tirelessly to make the Rochester area a better place to live, work and play for all of our neighbors.

MCC is proud to partner with RochesterWorks!, the county’s largest employment and training initiative. Our missions are one and the same: to help the people and businesses of Rochester, NY, develop a strong workforce and ensure a bright future for our community.
Monroe Community College, the Rochester City School District and other community partners are working together on an exciting initiative known as ROC the Future. Our goal is to ensure all children get the opportunities and support they need to succeed in school.
MCC students involved in AmeriCorps, a national service program with a branch located at our downtown campus, help students of all ages get more excited about their education. Volunteers have worked at several city schools, as well as the University of Rochester, the Rochester Education Foundation and even MCC itself.
The PSTF is a partnership

Monroe Community College
MCC’s Public Safety Training Facility (PSTF) grooms students to become highly skilled first responders. Taught by instructors with real-world experience, our programs include aircraft rescue and firefighting, emergency medical services training and police recruit basic training.
Students – as well as local public safety personnel – use MCC’s sophisticated equipment and technology, including burn building simulators, hazmat sprinkler labs, weapon ranges, diagnostic equipment and more.
